Short version: you can play gin rummy against the computer here for free — no download, no account. You play one-on-one against Gus, a computer opponent, in any desktop or tablet browser.
Meet Gus, your opponent
Gus is a single computer opponent who plays a real game of gin rummy. He reads the cards you throw, starves the melds he thinks you're building, and races you to the knock. Crucially, he plays fair: Gus draws from the same stock and discard pile you do — he does not peek at your hand and he does not stack the deck.
That matters, because the most common complaint about gin rummy apps is an opponent that feels rigged — one that suddenly "knows" exactly which card it needs. Gus is built to be beatable and honest, so a win feels earned and a loss tells you something.
Why play against the computer?
- No waiting. A hand starts the moment you open the tab — no matchmaking, no lobby, no second player required.
- Practice at your pace. Try a knock-early style or hold out for gin without holding up a human opponent.
- Learn the flow. If you're rusty, playing the computer is the fastest way to relearn draw, discard, knock, and scoring.
- Always available. One opponent, always ready, completely offline of any social pressure.
Real gin rummy, not a watered-down version
This is standard two-player gin rummy, scored the classic way:
- Build melds — runs and sets — and keep your unmatched cards (deadwood) low.
- Knock when your deadwood is ten or less, or go gin when every card is melded.
- Lay off, undercut, and collect the gin bonus exactly as you'd expect.
- Play each match to 100, not a shortened two-hand sprint.
For the full rules, see the gin rummy rules and scoring guide.
How to start
- Open the game in your browser — nothing to install.
- Cards are dealt and Gus takes the first turn or hands it to you.
- Draw, discard, build your melds, and knock when the moment is right.
